Testing facilitates to use the right material for right choice. It is also required to build consumers confidence on the material and to make sure that the product conforms to specification.
Testing is one of the main activities of the Institute IPIRTI is one of the laboratories recognized by BIS for testing of wood and wood based panels. BIS is using the services of the Institute for issue/renewal of license to wood based industries.
The Institute is also recognized for periodic calibration of testing equipment for wood based panels installed at the factories, as a part of requirement of BIS license.
Institute is equipped with wide range of facilities
for testing of wood, wood based panels and panels from other lignocellullosics (including agricultural residues) adhesives, adhesive components preservative chemicals and
Identification of timber species [as per relevant National/Internal National Standards]

Non destructive testing
Destructive tests are mainly used to evaluate properties and for conformity tests. Some of the advantages of NDT are: usefulness in research laboratories for gathering of material properties of large number of samples within a short time. It can be used as a quality control tool in manufacturing process. Facilitates utilization of full size panel to their real potential as otherwise it is always used taking lowest strength into consideration for safety purposes. This also enables the manufacturers to get better price for better quality production.
Advantages of NDT for wood and wood products: For homogenous and isotropic materials like metals and plastics NDT is used only to detect presence of discontinuities and voids or inclusions. For wood and wood products NDT can be used for both defect detection and strength evaluation.
However in India, NDT is popular only for metals, plastics and ceramics. For wood and wood products it is yet to make an impact, although in developed countries proven NDT methods are being used for wood and wood products.
Some of the NDT techniques applicable to wood and wood products are Sonic, Ultrasonic, Acoustic emission and Acousto Ultrasonic techniques.
IPIRTI has initiated action to establish NDT facilities for wood, wood based panels and composites from bamboo and other natural fibers both for research and training purposes. Institute is equipped with Elastosonic equipment and Ultrasonic ‘V’ Meter. Utilizing these instruments research work has been carried out on non destructive evaluation of wood and wood based panels and papers have been published in proceedings of international symposiums on Non Destructive Testing of Wood and Wood Products.fer of BMB technology M/S Super Natural Ply for establishing a production unit in Chandrapur, Maharashtra, the Institute has entered into an MOU, in January 2001, with M/S Timpack Industries Pvt. Ltd. for transfer of BMB and BMVC technologies.
