Status
Indian Plywood Industries Research & Training Institute (IPIRTI) is Autonomous Organization of the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India, registered under Karnataka Societies Registration Act in 1962
It has its Headquarters in Bangalore and outreach Field stations in Kolkata and Mohali
Thrust Area
Conservation of Natural Forests
(i) Through rationalization of utilization of available wood resourses by appropriate technological intervention
(ii) Development of wood substitution from other natural / renewable fibres
Mandate
Research on all aspects of production of sawn timber, manufacturing of plywood and other allied engineered and reconstituted wood or lignocellulosic products, including improvement in manufacturing processes, machines and appliances, time and motion studies – standardization of methods of working in factories.
Training in connection with forest products utilization for plywood industry and trade and allied industries. Imparting of technical education and/or training at undergraduate postgraduate, and/or any other level in technology of forests products, adhesives and paper laminates, and/or synthetic finishing and machinery.
Inspection, certification and testing of all forest products viz. plywood, wood, hardboard, particleboard, chipboard, furniture, glue-lam, compreg, doors, panel doors, block boards, flush doors, veneered panels, veneers, laminated panels, composite boards, and the products of allied trade and industry.
Extension includes information dissemination through technical reports. quarterly news letters, Research Reports, participation in exhibitions, seminars, conferences, workshops, visit of Scientists and technology transfer to the industry.

Vision
To be an apex institution of international repute by equipping itself with concurrent state-of-art technology and develop in-house frontline expertise to be able to carry out necessary R & D, and training activities in the field of wood and panel products.
Membership
Statutory members are secretaries to Govt of India in Ministries of Environment & Forests, Agriculture, Science & Technology, Planning Commission, Director General of Forests, Chief Secretary, Government of Karnataka, Director General, ICFRE and nominations of scientific organizations like CSIR,regulatory bodies like BIS. Membership is open to manufacturers of Plywood, Veneer, Bamboo mats , Mat based products, Particle board ,MDF or any other wood based panel products or manufacturers of wood adhesive or wood working machinery, sawmills or NGO’s, professional bodies and manufacturers association.

(ii) Training
One year Post Graduate Diploma in Wood panel products technology
Three months certificate course in Plywood manufacturing
Short term courses for 1 – 5 days or more on various processing aspects of wood based panel products such as plywood, flush door, block board, particle board, bamboo mat board,bamboo laminates or bamboo primary processing, Bamboo housing, Sawmilling, Sawdoctring etc.
Conducting of Specialised short term courses as per Clients requirements.

Testing of plywood and other panel products as per relevant BIS specifications in CENTEC laboratory which is recognized by Bureau of Indian Standards & accredited by NABL
Sawdoctoring services for wood cutting saws, knifes etc
Visit to industries by scientists / technicians to attend scientific/technical problems in factories/ Demonstrations/ On the job training
Transfer of technologies to industries through Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)
Providing solutions to common problems faced by wood based industries
Conducting of Workshops / Seminars / Interactive meets
Participation in exhibitions at Regional, National & International level
Formulation of specifications of new products and issue of draft amendments to the existing standards
Highlighting the problems of the industry at Government level
Undertaking sponsored projects assigned by any organizations for development of new products & processes

Intimating the user groups of the selected articles on plywood and wood based panel products chosen from a wide range of National / International journals.
